Thanks so much for this; a Lord of the Rings friend pointed me to this podcast, someone who heard your presentation on the music at ORC in L.A. and was very impressed.
I have loved each of the Complete Recordings and have looked forward to getting the one for RotK. Even more I can't wait (a necessary thing, since it is already unavailable!), hearing your Q and A.
Your last comments addressed the question of the score's enduring appeal. Even when the films were still in theatres it was clear to me that it was the scores that gave the films, already exceptional achievements, their greatness. My feeling is that even when the films are watched as an annual ritual (the way I used to watch The Wizard of Oz on TV every spring growing up), or not at all, the recordings of the music will be listened to regularly. The music is that good, and that vast, offering something new with each listening.
I have a question, which I hope the liner notes or your book will address: the hyptnotic vocal line that Renee Fleming sings in the Sammath Naur while Gollum holds the Ring aloft in triumph has always sounded to me like the theme that plays when the moth flies up to Gandalf in Orthanc in FotR, when the Ents march on Orthanc in TTT, and on the Pelennor as Theoden assesses the travail of Minas Tirith, just before the battle commences. Have I heard wrong? If so, what did Shore consider the import of that them: help unlooked for?
